On Saturday I came across a copy of The Sun as I sat pondering away on the Tube, and opened it to Clarkson’s page – which I always find hilariously funny, a tad crass, but also somewhat poignant…for those of you who didnt get a chance to read it, the long and short is why is the world going crazy over Obama and expecting him to save the world – he is just a man…So I would like to put this to the masses…why is the world going crazy over Obama, and what can he do for our financial crisis, small business enterprise – and will he ‘save’ the world’s economy?
Well, Obama is clearly a great man if for no other reason than he’s beaten hundreds of other very good opponents to reach his goal – McCain, Clinton etc etc. That doesn’t make him bigger or better than a great man, but it does make him very special. And he is in a better position than anyone else to ‘save the world’. Though he’s clearly got his work REALLY cut out to ‘save’ it from Gordon’s ‘saving’!
Small businesses need the ‘world to be saved’. One big company going down with, say, 10,000 jobs lost will possibly lose 50,000 jobs in total after the knock-on effect on small suppliers is considered; and many of these jobs could be in the third world. (I don’t know what the multiplier really is, but 5 to 1 can’t be too far off)…
So what we need is a leader, someone to inspire confidence and help us to move on, build our bridges and get across hem, as Charles Kettering once said ‘No one would have ever crossed the ocean if they could have got off the boat during the storm’…with small business being encouraged, we could be the ones to get the markets moving once more – bring something new to the global markets and encourage the flow of currency again…as at the moment, if I hear another person say ‘I will wait and see what the markets are doing’ I will scream – as they are clearly not doing lot!
But the question I am asking is; Is Obama this person to inspire such confidence in us and each other, to get us moving? Obama himself inspires the entrepreneurship, as Alex Bellinger at SmallBizPod says:

Obama, right now, is achieving that. He is the embodiment of the American dream, as many have said over the past few days, but he’s also the embodiment of the US entrepreneurial spirit.’
So, I say, YES HE CAN! He can inspire our markets and be the defibulator that electricutes them back to life, and he can inspire us entrepreneurs to get back on the horse and believe in orselves and the world’s economies once more!
Yes, we do need the inspiration and the vision that Obama represents – but the scarry thing is seeing how difficult it is for our governments to actually provide real help to the back bone of our economy – the SME’s. Despite saying that they are putting all this money into our economy the harsh reality is that it is not coming through.
What Mandleson has done is simply allocate a load more money into a scheme which has never really worked – the so called “Small Firms Loan Guarantee Scheme”. It may be called something different now, but it is still based on the same “commercial” requirements that the SFLGS is.
Furthermore, if one of the major causes of the Credit Crunch has been “poor” loans to the sub prime market handing our more “poor” loans simply compounds the problem.
Instead why doesn’t the government join up with MicroFunding and match our investors pound for pound. It may be small beer to Brown but it would make the world of difference to us and those we seek to help!
Sorry I don’t think we should be worrying about Obama.
This could be a really good time to start a small business for a number of reasons.
1 people are looking for some good news
2 if your business can make a start now it will be strong when the upturn comes as it surely will – we just don’t know when
3 investors are looking for a home for their money – not much profit from putting it in the bank
4 sitting on your hands is not a viable option
Absolutely – it’s all about self belief and confidence, so if the context within which people are being confident is supportive of their confidence – it’s a virtuous circle.
And don’t forget: even if the economy is 2%down, THAT MEANS IT’S STILL 98% FINE!!! Why doesn’t the press latch on to that? So the confidence should be poushing at an open(ish) door.
Yes I completely agree. We need quality loans, some success stories, something for the media to focus on other than scaremongering (which sells papers but has brought the markets to a grinding halt) …this will raise the confidence in people as it will be something you can see – perhaps even something tangible! However, this will take time to get into the public eye – so we need ways to get into the public eye without having to give something tangible – and actually Chris, thank you for saying so – but i also think its a fabulous idea of getting the governments to collaborate with mF… and one I will look into – lets see if we can’t break down some bureaucratic barriers and reach someone with foresight and an innovative mind! …the scaremongering in the press is just greasing the wheels that are turning the economy down…we need to propagate something else, something positive for them to get stuck into!

He can cathalise our faith in tommorrow, for the crisis of nowdays is more a crisis of FAITH into a safe tommorrow.
Whell.. he could do something, stop the wars and withdraw all american soldiers from worldwide home, as soon as possible, to restore faith and trust into a better tommorrow.
People without faith and that do not trust tommorrow will never dream and never work to accomplish their dreams, and economy is all about working to accomplish ones dreams, who for himself, but mostly to accomlìplish other people dreams agains a pay, the daily bread.
If no one dares dreaming and investing into a better tommorrow, nobody needs no workers, nobody pays nobody, and the machine of the economy vanishes under our leggs as fumes…
Allow people to dream, allow people to work, lower the taxes on proffit, abolish or reduce VAT at 3%, allow people to get rich, reduce beoureaucracy to less than 10% of the one today, no wars, and more time to spend with fammily (6 hours a day to work for a bread, instead of 8) and you will allow more quality time for dreaming, creativity, building a better tommorrow.
And this will make the sistem work again.
It is the greed of the politicians that blocked it with huge taxes on anything, and with wars.

Firstly as an entrepreneur let me begin by saying that the small businessman has absolutely no hope in becoming a captain of industry and staying afloat if the hole is bigger than the vessel itself. Government bureaucracy is overwhelmingly too great and the task of satisfying the record number of public servants distracts from creating value. We need to be left alone, to run our business as WE see fit and the best form of control is the client deciding if he wishes to purchase from us or use our services. Government has become GOVERNANCE and no reasonable free capitalist can prosper under this regime. What I feel is happening is the mass confiscation of wealth through a Marxist socialist cabal which permeates government on every level, especially Obama, with the sole intention of rewarding failure.
